Mikhail Glinka (1804 –1857) was the first Russian composer to gain wide recognition within his own country, and is often regarded as the fountainhead of Russian classical music.
The ‘jota’ is a genre of music and the associated dance known throughout Spain, most likely originating in Aragon. Being a visual representation, the jota is danced and sung accompanied by castanets, and the interpreters tend to wear regional costumes.
Many non-Spanish composers have used the ‘Jota Aragonesa’ in various works. Amongst these is Glinka’s ‘Caprice Billant’.
