Fikret Amirov (1922-1984) was a prominent Azerbaijani composer of the Soviet period. Fikret Amirov grew up in an atmosphere of Azerbaijani folk music and his music was strongly influenced by Azeri folk melodies. He created a new genre called 'symphonic mugam' which were based on classical folk pieces.
Dedicated to the Russian-Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian, the 'Symphonic Dances' is a colorful work in five movements. Dynamic and flashy, each section is descriptive of a particular dance: 'Dance of Joy', 'Girl's Dance', 'Dance Caprice', 'The Yalli Round Dance', and 'Dance of the Djigits'. The use of mixed meters and various modes gives the work its exotic flavor.
