Giuseppe Verdi's opera 'Un Ballo in Maschera' contains two famous soprano roles, strong male solo roles, fine choruses and sharp dramatic situations. And yet it is not quite as popular as some other Verdi operas preceding and following it.
The aria 'Alla vita che t'arride' is sung by Renato in the first act: Renato warns King Riccardo (Gustav III) of the conspiracy against him, urging the king to heed his warnings for the good of the country, though Riccardo, blinded by love, dismisses the danger, leading to his assassination.
