Ludwig van Beethoven composed several military marches: 'Polonaise' (WoO21), 'Ecossaise' (WoO 22), 'Yorckscher March' (WoO 18), 'Military March' (WoO 19) 'Military March in D Major' (WoO 24) and the 'Zapfenstreich Marsch' (WoO 20). The ‘Militär Marsch in D’ (WoO 24), also known as ‘The Great March in D’ was composed in Vienna, completed and dated June 3, 1816. Beethoven was commissioned to compose this march for a great military parade which took place in Vienna on June 3, 1816.
