Mikhail Mikhailovich Ippolitov-Ivanov (1859 - 1935) was a Russian composer, conductor and teacher. His works include operas, orchestral music, chamber music and a large number of songs. His style is similar to that of his teacher Rimsky-Korsakov.
Ippolitov-Ivanov's most well-known compositions are the 'Caucasian Sketches', which are two orchestral suites composed in 1894 and 1896. The third movement of the second suite is the ‘Lezghinka Dance’, a folk dance originating among the Lezghin people of the North Caucasus. It uses a fast 6/8 rhythm, and can be either a solo male or a pair dance. Dutch arranger Andre Bodin transcribed this ‘Lezghinka Dance’ for Symphonic Band.
