Giuseppe Verdi's opera 'Un Ballo in Maschera' contains two famous soprano roles, strong male solo roles, fine choruses and sharp dramatic situations. And yet it is not quite as popular as some other Verdi operas preceding and following it.
The aria 'Ma dall'arido stelo divulsa' is sung by Amelia in the second act: disguised as a fortune-teller, she reflects on her forbidden love for King Gustav III, comparing herself to a flower torn from its stem, filled with despair as she contemplates her fate and the impossibility of her love, making it a highlight of the opera's emotional depth.
