The operetta 'Babes in Toyland' was composed by Victor Herbert (1859-1924) in 1903. In this operetta on a libretto by Glen MacDonough, various characters from 'Mother Goose nursery rhymes' are woven together into a Christmas-themed musical extravaganza. 'Babes in Toyland' features some of Herbert's most famous songs. The theme song 'Toyland', and the most famous instrumental piece from the operetta, 'March of the Toys', occasionally show up on Christmas compilations.
American arranger Douglas McLain transcribed this famous march for Symphonic Band.
