Adolphe Adam composed the ballet music for "Giselle" on a libretto by Theophile Gautier. In his libretto, Gautier refers to the legend "Wilis" from "De l’Allemagne" by Heinrich Heine. The Wilis are young women who died before their wedding, but their desire to dance burns so much even in death that they climb out of their graves as ghosts at night to dance at forked ways. If you get hold of a young man, dance with him wildly until he finally collapses dead. (Edition Symphonic Works)
