Gabriel Fauré composed the 'Pavane' during the summer of 1887 and it was originally be orchestrated for a chamber orchestra. Although he enjoyed composing and performing it, Fauré was unaware of (or too modest to admit to) the influence the piece would generate. He remarked that it was 'elegant, but otherwise unimportant'. The 'Pavane' was published in 1901 and has remained a cornerstone of the French 'Impressionist' musical repertoire. French arranger Bruno Peterschmitt transcribed the 'Pavane' for a brass tentet.
